Long-time Westcoat applicators, Bach Custom Coatings, was asked to install the “perfect” epoxy floor for an airplane hangar. The client wanted a new floor for his 5,850 square-foot airplane hangar in Aurora, Oregon – of course, the team at Bach was thrilled at the challenge.
After hearing their customer’s wishes for their hangar, Bach knew the Westcoat Thin Film system would be the perfect solution. Jeff Bach said the biggest obstacle for this floor was that their client wanted the floor to be “flawless” which is hard for an area this size. Jeff knew their customer wasn’t going to settle for anything less than perfection, so the crew had to have a clear plan for the installation.
To start, the slab had saw cuts at 20’ intervals and the owner wanted them filled so as to not be visible in the finished product – not an easy feat. After diamond grinding the slab, the crew cleaned out all the saw cuts and filled them with a polymer modified cement and then over-filled them with epoxy.
Once that had cured, all the joints (saw cuts) were ground again to create a completely smooth floor. Then came the application of the Thin Film 100% Solids system. Since a pure white floor was requested all products were applied in white. The concrete was primed with EC-12 Epoxy Primer in white, applied a build coat of EC-34 Epoxy Topcoat in white and finished with two coats of EC-95 Polyurethane Topcoat in white for ultimate protection.
For the application there was a five man crew: one dedicated mix person, one person to cut in edges and carry materials, another person to gauge out the material with a squeegee and two more applicators to back roll it with 18” rollers. The crew worked fast to ensure that they kept a nice wet edge all the way through the application process.
The result was a seamless and durable floor that was flawless, exactly what the customer wanted for his airplane hangar.
