A Repeatable Flooring Solution for an Expanding Entertainment Brand
As national and regional brands expand, their interior finishes must do more than perform at a single location. Materials must support a recognizable customer experience, accommodate site-specific conditions, and provide a consistent standard that can be carried into future facilities.
Taroko Sports combines batting cages, arcade games, food, and entertainment in an immersive baseball-themed environment. For its Mesa and Chandler, Arizona, locations, the company needed a flooring solution that could withstand the demands of active batting areas while contributing to the visual identity of the brand.
Westcoat’s Flex Epoxy System was specified for the batting cages and ball-return areas. Installed in custom greens, reds, and field-inspired layouts, the seamless floors help transform functional activity zones into an extension of the Taroko Sports experience.
Flooring That Supports a Growing Brand
Taroko Sports brings batting cages, games, food, and social activities together in one sports-themed setting. Every part of the facility helps build that experience, including the floor.
Instead of choosing a standard solid-color floor, the design team used custom colors and layouts to create the look of a baseball field. Green floor areas suggest grass, while red and neutral sections define key activity zones.
The custom design helps each space feel connected to the Taroko Sports brand. It also gives the company a floor concept that teams can adapt for other locations.
For architects and specifiers, this approach offers an important benefit. They can set a common design standard for the brand while adjusting the system details for the needs of each building.
A Flexible Epoxy System for Hard-Use Areas
Batting cage floors face more than normal foot traffic. Baseballs strike the floor many times each day. Equipment moves through the space, and staff must clean the area often.
The project team chose Westcoat’s Flex Epoxy System because it provides a strong, seamless surface and can handle normal movement in a properly built plywood deck. The system also gave the team the color choices needed to create the baseball field design.
The finished surface supports several project goals:
- Handles repeated ball impact and daily foot traffic
- Helps manage normal movement in the wood deck
- Creates a seamless and easy-to-clean floor
- Supports custom colors and detailed layouts
- Adds to the look and marketing value of the facility
- Gives the brand a design concept it can use at other sites
Solving Site Conditions at the Mesa Location
The wood deck at the Mesa location did not meet Westcoat’s standard substrate guidelines. The deck had too few fasteners and areas that were not level.
These issues created a clear challenge. A seamless coating follows the shape of the surface below it, so uneven areas may show in the final floor.
PDCI completed added prep and used an EC-34 build coat to reduce visible surface flaws. The Mesa floor included:
- EC-12 Epoxy Primer
- EC-72 Epoxy Patch Gel for repairs
- Two coats of EC-44 Flex Epoxy
- An EC-34 build coat to help level the surface
- Two pigmented coats of SC-65
- One clear, semi-gloss coat of SC-65
The work improved the final look while helping the project stay on track for opening day.
However, coatings cannot replace a sound and properly built deck. Architects and project teams should review plywood thickness, fastener spacing, joist spacing, flatness, and other deck details before flooring work begins.
Adjusting the System for the Chandler Location
The Chandler location used the same main Flex Epoxy system but received a different broadcast and topcoat assembly.
The Chandler floor included:
- EC-12 Epoxy Primer
- EC-72 Epoxy Patch Gel
- Two coats of EC-44 Flex Epoxy
- An EC-34 full-broadcast layer
- Two coats of EC-102 Polyaspartic Topcoat
This approach let the team keep a shared design style while selecting a finish that met the needs of the site.
That balance matters for multi-location brands. The main system and brand colors can stay consistent, while the full floor assembly can change based on the substrate, use, schedule, and site conditions.
Meeting a Tight Opening Schedule
Both projects followed short construction schedules tied to planned opening dates. The custom design also required the installer to lay out several colors with clean lines and clear borders.
PDCI worked closely with the other project teams to protect each step of the installation. During topcoat work, the general contractor kept other trades out of the area. This reduced dust, damage, and unwanted traffic while the finish cured.
Careful planning also helped the crew place each color in the correct area without slowing the job.
The team completed the custom floors within the planned schedule and gave Taroko Sports the field-like look it wanted.
Durable Floors That Become Part of the Experience
The Flex Epoxy floors continue to perform well under regular use. Staff can clean the seamless surfaces with less effort, and the custom colors remain a strong part of the facility design.
The baseball field pattern also supports photos, videos, and other marketing content. Guests do not simply walk across a coated floor. They step into a space designed around the sport.
This makes the flooring both a working surface and a brand feature.
What Architects and Specifiers Can Learn
The Taroko Sports projects show how commercial flooring can support both performance and brand design.
For multi-location sports, restaurant, retail, and entertainment brands, a flooring standard should provide a common look without forcing every site to use the exact same assembly. Substrates, traffic, moisture, schedules, and local job conditions can vary from one building to the next.
Architects and specifiers should consider the following steps when planning similar projects:
- Set the main colors and design features at the brand level.
- Review each substrate before selecting the full floor assembly.
- Include clear plywood and fastener requirements in the project documents.
- Plan custom color layouts before installation begins.
- Protect coating areas from other trades during application and cure.
- Work with trained installers who understand the full system.
- Adjust primers, build coats, broadcasts, and topcoats to match each site.
This process can help a brand create a consistent customer experience while still giving each project the right technical solution.
About the Flex Epoxy System
Westcoat’s Flex Epoxy System is a low-odor, low-VOC, flexible epoxy flooring system. It can serve as a fluid-proofing, waterproofing, and crack-isolation membrane over properly prepared concrete or plywood.
The system provides a seamless surface, high strength, strong adhesion, and several finish options. Project teams can also use custom colors and slip-resistant textures to meet the design and use needs of the space.
Flex Epoxy works well in commercial spaces that need both protection and design choice, including entertainment venues, kitchens, equipment rooms, public spaces, and other hard-use areas.
