How to Use Garage Floor Epoxy
In an automotive garage, whether it’s for parking or vehicle repair, a Westcoat garage floor epoxy is ready to protect your facility, staff, and visitors. Westcoat protects floors from the absorption of chemicals and lubricants that create safety issues, and from the abuse of heavy vehicles, dropped tools, spilled oil and solvents, and more. We manufacture several excellent options with different specifications for application so you can choose the right garage floor epoxy for your facility:
- What’s the life expectancy of an epoxy floor?
This varies, but resinous flooring systems can perform for many years when properly maintained, inspecting every 2-5 years and reapplying topcoat as needed. See more information in our General Maintenance Guide.
- What problems can occur with an epoxy floor?
The most common problem is choosing the wrong system for the use of space. For example, a high-build system is required but a thin film system was installed that can’t handle the working environment. Surface preparation and testing for moisture are key to promoting proper adhesion.
- What can I do in terms of maintenance to extend the epoxy floor’s life to the fullest?
Install the system properly, clean, and maintain it to preserve the life of the floor, proper inspection and reseal as needed to protect and extend the life of the system.
- Can my maintenance staff install the floor, or does it need a specialist?
For professional use only. A properly trained, equipped, and licensed QCA should install our systems. We have a nationwide network. Once installed, maintenance teams can perform regular maintenance such as cleaning and resealing the topcoat.
- How long does a typical installation take?
Varies based on the conditions and size of the job but we offer many fast dry and quick turnaround for the demanding customer.
- Does the epoxy emit chemical or other odors for which I need to close the facility during installation?
Westcoat strives to provide the highest quality with low VOC / 100% solids, water-based and other options to allow for low odor, non-flammable flooring options to minimize impact to our customers.
- Does a new epoxy floor emit any odors after drying? How long does that go on?
With proper ventilation, our low VOC products’ odor subsides after the product cures.
- What kind of surface works best? What kind of surface preparation is needed?
Epoxy systems are designed and suitable for concrete substrates with a minimum of 2500 psi and approx. cured for 28 days. The concrete should be in good condition. Westcoat provides guidelines for surface prep based on the system per ICRI industry standards.
- What are my options in terms of colors or textures?
We offer many colors in a variety of solid and decorative finishes including metallic, quartz sand, acrylic chips. Additionally, we offer extensive topcoats and sealers with a variety of sheens.
What we really appreciate is the "consistency in the can”. When you’re out in the field opening a kit of material, the last thing you want to worry about is what you’re going to find inside. Before finding Westcoat, that was a real concern with some of their competitors. Since switching to them a decade ago, that's no longer an issue. In a very packed industry with hundreds of manufactures to choose from, Westcoat stands head and shoulders above the crowd!

We have a loyal base of general contractors who repeatedly come to us to have Westcoat installed on their jobs--whether new construction or renovations. Our reputation in the industry through the use of Westcoat systems is growing with each day, and it’s wonderful to finally be installing coatings that we know will serve our clients well for many years to come.

As President of Decking Around, I have been working with Westcoat for 20 plus years, over all these years we have grown together and I consider them to be family! We have been through a lot of improvements and changes but what hasn't changed is the great support we as contractors need to keep our business thriving. Westcoat gets a Five Star rating from me, keep up the great work and is always a pleasure to be part of the family.
Dave Jefferson, President ( Decking Around )
I found the Westcoat product line about 10 years ago when my Epoxy Company was only a year old. We had struggle with hot tire pick up with our previous product line. The Westcoat reps were always available to answer questions and guide us. Ten years later we still continue to grow and I prefer Westcoat as my product line. I highly recommend everyone to install this product and we continue to use their products daily.
John Proffitt, Owner ( Tulsa Garage Gurus )
We have used Westcoat materials for 7 years. The quality and technical support is second to none. The team at Westcoat does more than provide a quality solution, though. They are true partners who are as committed to our success as they are to their own.

BBH has been applying the Westcoat systems for the past 14 years & cannot say enough about its durability, applicator friendly products, and wide range of finishes, creative marketing & one of the best service support teams I've ever worked with. You never feel like you are on your own when facing challenges in the field. After working with Westcoat for several years, you realize that it's a privilege to be part of a great culture aside from the product lines.
Daryle Brown, VP ( BBH )
Using the Westcoat family of coating products has allowed me to one-stop-shop all of my coating projects needs from Cementitous to Waterproofing to Epoxies. With WestCoat I secured my largest cementitous coating project ever and their support goes far beyond just answering questions. My representative answers the phone after hours and across time zones and is always at the ready to lend support to me. He helps prior to the sale with trainings through the sale and application with site visits and post sale with follow ups and warranty documentation. Couldn't be more happy satisfied as a coating contractor/estimator.
