The Los Angeles Union Station was first opened in 1939 and is the largest railroad passenger terminal in the Western United States. If you have ever had the pleasure of visiting, you experienced the tremendous treat of Art Deco and Mission Revival architectural expertise. Union Station is a true slice of an era that still serves millions today.
The Flooring Issue
When the city realized the station’s floors needed to be repaired and revived, they contacted contractors Swinerton Builders out of Irvine to help with a plan of action. Already having a relationship with Westcoat, Swinerton Builders specified Westcoat for the job. Our Southern California technical manager and architectural representative, Bill England, worked to specify the perfect customized system that would perfectly fit the unique needs of the historic LA landmark.
The Flooring Solution
Due to its durability and staining abilities, the Level-It Polish system was specified, and the process began. Because of their polishing expertise and vast experience with commercial construction, QCAs (Qualified Contractor Applicators) Lennova USA was chosen as the applicator for the new flooring system.
What is the Level-It Polish system?
The system is an interior, cementitious, self-leveling flooring system that provides a finished floor with the look and feel of stained and polished concrete. The system provides a high-build, quick-drying solution for uneven interior floors. It is designed to transform rough, uneven, or unattractive interior concrete into a decorative surface.
Bill worked hard to provide perfect samples for review. The samples included an integral color of TC-40 Liquid Colorant in Clay, Smoke and Bark, and SC-24 Polish Guard. When the samples were approved, the installation of Phase 1 began.
Polish Installation Process
The installation process involved a 2″ fill done in two pours. The cement mix was 8 ounces of TC-40 per bag of TC-27 which was the magic mix for the necessary color tones. The first phase came out wonderfully, and the final floors matched the approved samples – a perfect example of a project well-done start to finish.
